Cheese-burger with sweet potato fries

Burgers are easy to make and really quick to cook, and home made ones are so much better than your average take-away.

Swap the salad and cheese for whatever you prefer, and use normal potatoes in place of sweet potatoes if you like.

If you’re feeling really greedy you might cook this for two people, but it will stretch to four with a big salad and a few extra fries.

One thing to remember is to flatten your burgers out a bit – they tend to shrink, and you also want a nice even thickness so they cook well throughout.

  • Makes 4 burgers
  • 500g minced beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg yolk
  • A few sprigs of parsley, finely chopped
  • Squeeze of tomato puree
  • Dash of soy sauce
  • Pinch of mixed dried herbs
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • A handful of flour
  • A few slices of strong cheddar cheese
  • 1 large sweet potato
  • 4 bread rolls
  • Half red pepper, thinly sliced
  • Large tomato, thinly sliced
  • Rocket leaves
  • A few gherkins, thinly sliced
  • Tomato ketchup and mayonnaise to taste
  1. Mix the minced beef, red onion, egg yolk, parsley, mixed herbs, tomato puree, soy sauce, and salt and pepper in a bowl. It’s a good idea to really mash it all together.
  2. Form the mixture into a tight ball and divide into four.
  3. Flatten out each burger and coat with a little flour to stop it sticking to the plate or your hands.
  4. Prepare your buns by slicing in half and lightly toasting the inside under the grill or on a griddle pan.
  5. Cook the burgers on a medium to high heat in a frying pan, griddle pan, under the grill, or on the barbecue. If you like your meat medium rare, they should be a little pink inside, but always ensure they are cooked thoroughly.
  6. Peel the sweet potato and cut into thin strips.
  7. Shallow or deep fry the sweet potato until slightly golden. Drain on kitchen paper when done.
  8. When your burgers are cooked, take the bottom of one bun and place a burger on top, add slices of cheese, and a little salad, and gherkin.
  9. spread your ketchup and mayo on the top of the bun and serve with extra salad and fries.
